English Cream Breeder We imported our first "English Cream" Golden Retriever about 7 years ago. We fell in love with the look & color. We have imported a number of dogs from Europe through the years. We especially loved that the European hip standards are stricter than the American standards. Since adding the European blood lines to our program, we have gotten almost exclusively "excellents" on our hip ratings. The blending of our imports with our American lines has produced some lovely dogs. We have produced Cream Golden Retriever puppies that are the best of both worlds. Our cream puppies have a thicker undercoating, a bit more height, a little more active (most of the Cream Golden Retrievers tend to be pretty mellow) than their ancestors. In America there is much discussion on the acceptability of the Cream Colored Retrievers. It is really nothing more than a difference of opinion between the U.S. & well... most of the rest of the world on what are acceptable colors for a Golden. The Kennel Club (of the U.K) states "Colour Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany. A few white hairs on chest only, permissible." The country of origin for the breed faults any red or mahogany colored retriever. While the A.K.C. states "Color: Rich, lustrous golden of various shades. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault." The A.K.C. faults any excessively pale color. That is why we show our English Cream Golden Retrievers in International venues that use the country of breed origins standard. Who is right & who is wrong? That is a debate
that isn't likely to end any time soon. |
